Summary: Best practices for updating dashcam firmware safely to avoid bricking the device or losing settings.
When should you update firmware?
Firmware updates can fix bugs (freezing, SD card issues, app connectivity) and sometimes add features. We recommend updating only when:
- you are experiencing a problem that the update fixes, or
- the manufacturer recommends the update for your model, or
- you are setting up the dashcam for the first time and want the latest stable firmware
Before you update (important)
- Confirm the exact model (some models have similar names but different firmware).
- Use a reliable power source so the dashcam cannot lose power during the update.
- Use a quality SD card and format it in the dashcam first (unless the brand instructs otherwise).
- Read the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model.
Typical update method (SD card update)
- Download the correct firmware file for your exact model from the manufacturer.
- Copy the firmware file to the root of the SD card (not inside a folder).
- Safely eject the SD card from your computer.
- Insert the SD card into the dashcam while the dashcam is powered off.
- Power on the dashcam and wait. The dashcam may reboot during the update.
- Do not remove power or the SD card until the update is complete.
- After updating, check the firmware version in the settings menu.
After the update
- Re-check key settings (date/time, resolution, parking mode, sensitivity).
- Format the SD card again in the dashcam (recommended for many brands).
